A while back I told you about my experience when booking at this hotel. Thankfully the situation was handled well and we completed our stay there recently.

I picked this hotel for it's location: I wanted a two room suite close to Stillwater- not as easy to find as I had imagined.

Thankfully the Holiday Inn Express and Suites was able to fit my needs. First two tips:

Become a rewards member with every hotel you stay at. It costs nothing and you can earn free hotel stays.

Don't forget to request a discount if you are a AAA member.

This hotel has two floors; our suite we had was on the second. Thankfully the elevator is directly across from check in so you don't have to haul your luggage far.

As promised the suite had a living area with a pull out couch that the girls (because they are small and light) were able to sleep comfortably on, an eating area, a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, and sink, a bedroom with a queen bed and a single bathroom. The suite was roomy enough to spread out in and we didn't feel at all cramped.

That said, the lay out could have been better. The bathroom was located directly inside the entrance from the hall. Relatively common, yes, but not so great when you are trying to move from the bedroom to the bathroom without waking children.

My single favorite thing about Holiday Inn Express hotels is the breakfast included with your stay. And this location was above average. The weekend breakfast included: biscuits, gravy, sausage, eggs, hot cinnamon rolls, cereals, breads, fruit, yogurt, breakfast bars, milk, juice, coffee and tea. The hot items were hot, the cold items were cold and everything was laid out neatly with easy access.

A bit more info about this location:

There are 4 two room suites, 12 one room suites and 4 whirlpool suites. 101 total rooms.

Wireless internet is available and a computer is set up in the breakfast room for your convenience.

A pool and exercise room are available on the main level.

The staff were very friendly and helpful- especially the ladies in the breakfast area. When I was trying to juggle a tray of food and keep track of the girls (who had to "help") they were more than happy to grab beverages and silverware when my hands were full.

This location was undergoing renovations while we were staying but, honestly, I wouldn't have known but for the sign in the lobby.

The two room suite costs $135.99 per night (with AAA discount). For it's location, the space we had and the services the hotel provides I will gladly stay there again.

Believe it or not we actually ventured in to the Mall of America with the sole intention of visiting the new Nickelodeon Universe.

The nice thing about this theme park is there is no admission. You can walk through without paying a dime. If you want to ride... Well, that will cost you. We bought a "Comet Package" (35 points) for $31.50 plus tax. Because the average ride is 3 points this pass didn't last long. If you plan to spend an entire day at the mall or if you have older children I would splurge on the Unlimited Ride Wristband for $29.95 each.

Nickeoldoen Universe has all your favorite Nick characters hosting their own rides as well as a few "old favorites" like the Big Rigs and the carousel. Our first order of business was to find the Backyardigans. But as we were making our way through the park we saw Dora- live and in person!

There are two spots in the park where you can meet your favorite characters, give them hugs and have your picture taken. Brenna was very excited to meet Dora!

These four rides consumed our points (and Doug got to ride the Big Rigs free with Caelan and we both rode the carousel free with the girls)- they go fast. Luckily, for our girls, that was enough and we got to go on with our day.

Helpful things to know:

There are 7 rides that allow a chaperone to ride for free with small children.

Tickets can be purchased at self serve kiosks with a credit card. If you prefer to pay cash you have to brave the largest Nickelodeon retail store in the country or guest services.

There are two restrooms in the park itself as well as two ATMs.

Within the park there are 3 places to eat: Eats (a wide variety of foods), Caribou Coffee and Kemps Ice Cream Cafe.

You can shop at 5 Nickelodeon stores- including the flagship store with the most Nickelodeon merchandise you'll find anywhere!

If your teens are too cool for the rides there is a huge arcade with all the hottest games.

If you're looking for better food than you can find in the park or upstairs at the food court allow me to suggest the California Cafe. It is just upstairs from Nickelodeon Universe (their patio overlooks the park) so you don't have to go far. The food is exceptional (the Chicken Tostadas and Salmon Enchiladas we had were so fresh and yummy!) and the kids meals (presented in a bento box) are healthy and kid friendly.

And if you've got a budding architect in your family be sure to spend some time at LegoLand, right next to Nickelodeon Universe. You can play with Legos, buy Legos in bulk and marvel at the Lego creations.

Renting a car in a foreign country for the first time can be very confusing. What do you need? How do you get the best deal? Do you rent on your own or use a package deal? I have a few tricks for you to keep in mind.

    1) Do your homework. You need to check all your options when you are traveling. You want to get the best deal but you also want a vehicle that will fit your needs. A cheap small car probably won’t work for a family of 4 with luggage for a week.

    2) Always pay in your local currency when possible. It will keep you from paying foreign transaction fees and you will probably pay less than the conversion rate.

    3) Try to pick up your vehicle away from airports. This is especially easy in large cities with great public transportation (London, Paris, Rome, Dublin, New York, etc). It’s simple supply and demand- more people pick up cars at airports, therefore the rates can be higher.

    4) In a foreign country by the CDW (collision damage waiver). Your auto insurance won’t cover an accident and CDWs are relatively cheap.

    5) Let a car hire company search the best rates for you. ArgusCarHire is one I utilize quite a bit. They search over 450 rental agencies worldwide for the best deal. Their website is very easy to use and their list of pick up/drop off locations is one of the most extensive I’ve seen.

    6) Know how to drive a manual transmission. You will most likely pay more for an automatic.

Because I like to travel it is important that I get the best deal I can on absolutely everything. My “Travel Favorites” folder is filled with websites for travel companies, airlines, car rental agencies and hotels.

One thing I really love when I am searching for a deal is comparison search engine. With just a few parameters I can find just what I am looking for in far less time than searching individually.

One of the best comparison search engines for car rentals is CarRentals.co.uk. (voted best car hire website in 2007). Don’t let the .uk scare you off- they search the globe to find the best deal for you.

So whether you’re looking for Car hire malaga, a lorrie for navigating Irish roads or a mini van to shuttle visiting relatives around your area let CarRentals.co.uk find you the very best deal.

It's like being on a "real" farm. The Minnesota Zoo is huge - it's an all day event! Be sure to bring your walking shoes! But if you get tired there is a monorail that provides a "tree top tour" of the Northern Trail for $4 per person. Kids love the train and it's a great break for your tired feet!

Other things that are good to know:

There are 9 restrooms/diaper changing areas located throughout the park.

There are also 3 family restrooms.

One nursing area is available in the Minnesota Trail restroom.

There are 5 ATMs.

Strollers and wheelchairs can be rented.

If you get hungry

There are two lakeside picnic areas outside the zoo if you want to pack a lunch

Grizzly Coast Cafe has ethnic Russian foods as well as "zoo food" like hot dogs and hamburgers

Call of the Wild has Asian entrees, grilled foods, salads, sandwiches and pizza

Zoo Cafe features Caribou coffee, bakery items and ice cream

Tiger Treats has subs, salads, pizza, ice cream and cold beer

Family Farm House has home-cooked "farm" meals

GIfts & Other Goodies

Timber Lodge Traders is the "main" gift shop. Everything is here. They even have a "build a zoo animal" similar to Build a Bear

Water Works Market has all your aquatic goodies

Central Plaza Gifts has Grizzly Coast souveniers as well as necessities like hats, sunscreen and cameras

You can even get an airbrushed tattoo.

You can find information on admission, opening times and directions by clicking this link.

We can't wait to make a return trip and see more! (Many exhibits were closed the night we visited as the focus was on the new exhibit.)

The rooms are spacious and comfortable with large en suite bathrooms. All rooms are on the ground level and many have a great view looking over the town and out to the ocean. Cathy Normoyle, your gracious hostess, says you can see the Aran Islands on a clear day. (We didn't have a clear day when we were there so I can't claim to have seen them). Most of the bedrooms sleep two and a couple even sleep three. The beds were very comfortable and a cot is available upon request. All rooms have coffee and tea service and a lovely sitting area for gazing out the large windows at the breathtaking view.

There is a 5 deposit and a short history of the site is available from the innkeeper, Lily, for 2.50. Grab a copy of this guide before getting started. It will be invaluable as you wander through the buildings.

Once back in Doolin you have quite a few amusements to keep you occupied. I highly recommend at least one evening at Gus O'Connor's Pub. If you visit during high season you'll find music every night. Otherwise you may have to wait until the weekend. But Doolin is known for it's traditional Irish music so you won't be disappointed. The musicians sit in a booth- it's called a session- which makes it very informal and easy to join in. There is no set time so try some of the best fish & chips I've ever tasted or the huge bowl of steamed mussels, grab a pint, join in the craic and relish in a true pub experience.

Because it is a pub you will not be waited on. Head up to the bar to make your drink and food orders (and to grab menus) and chat with the bartender.

If you have nice weather spend some time wandering through Doolin and stopping in the craft and jewelry shops. And don't pass by the music shops- this is the heart of Irish traditional music.

If you are heading to the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin you will surely see Doonagore Castle on the edge of town.

I was booking a hotel for an upcoming weekend away. I found the perfect room at the Holiday Inn Express in Woodbury, Minnesota (just east of St. Paul): a two room suite, close to Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley.

When I called the hotel the woman who answered the phone spoke so quickly I couldn't understand her. I inquired about the suite I wanted and it was available; great, I'll take it! (Two room suites aren't easy to find near Stillwater) She quoted me the price and I asked about a AAA discount. She told me there wasn't one.

I should mention that I am a Priority Club member (always join hotel rewards clubs- it's free) and have stayed with HIE many times. So when she said there was no AAA rate I was skeptical but wanted the reservation in place so I finished the booking.

Then I went back online. I saw a few price discrepancies so I called the toll free number. While the room I booked wasn't shown online (which is why I always call the hotel directly to ask about room specifics) the operator was able to tell me that a AAA rate was available and applied it to my account.

The fact that a AAA discount was available and I was told it wasn't when I specifically asked for it frustrated me so I called back to the hotel. The phone was answered by the woman who I had spoken to previously. I asked to speak with a manager; she told me she was a supervisor, could she help me? "No," I replied, "I would really like to speak with a manager."

She transferred me and I left a message.

About 35 minutes later I received a call from Robert Davis, the general manager of the property. He was very apologetic and said that, if the room you want is available, there is always a AAA rate. He assured me that the supervisor I dealt with would be spoken to and the situation would be addressed immediately. He also thanked me for bringing this to his attention and reduced the rate for my room.

Here's what I learned from this (and what you can learn from me):

If something doesn't seem right don't be afraid to question it.

Go directly to the manager if you have a problem.

Be polite when stating the problem and don't be afraid to ask for the problem to be fixed (as in my case I asked for the discount to be applied; the additional discount was a bonus).

Because you have established this personal relationship with the manager you want to be sure to introduce yourself when you can (if the issue was handled over the phone) and thank them again for their assistance. Personal relationships go a long way in the hospitality industry.

With American Airline's recent announcement that they will charge for every checked bag you really need to plan you packing very carefully. Here are some tips to help you:

First, check out my previous post about shipping vacation items. Most hotels will accept your bags a few days in advance of your arrival. Ship everything you can- even ship your luggage. Lock it, tape down the zippers and let it go.

Second, save space in you luggage by packing tight. Roll your clothing or use space bags. Tuck small items in the shoes you pack. Buy small containers for toiletries and purchase travel size products.

Third, pack smart. Make sure all your clothing coordinates. Think layers. Wear your bulky items on the plane. See this post - an article by Clinton Kelly from What Not To Wear.

Next, make sure your carry on fits the airline's standards. Check the weight before you leave home. Don't overpack it and make sure you can get everything in and out of it easily at security. If you're hyper-organized like me check out the Zuca Pro bag. With included packing inserts (including a liquids bag) it's easy to keep your stuff together. And the super light aluminum alloy frame doubles as a seat for those crowded airports. Zuca also makes a wheeled locker and sport bag- great for the kids.

Plan to do laundry or have laundry done for you if you will be traveling for a week or more. You can bring half the stuff.

Lastly, check out my video on how I packed for a family of four for a week's vacation. For now, at least, you are still allowed to check bags without additional cost on overseas flights.

I believe you don't drive through Ireland so much as you hurtle. Merriam-Webster defines hurtle as : to move rapidly or forcefully. And, quite honestly, when you are driving down roads like this you don't have to be going very fast to feel like you are going way too fast.

But I love driving in Ireland and can't honestly imagine seeing the country any other way. Many roads on your journey will be narrow and lined by hedgerows or stone fences and meeting another vehicle while traveling on them can require quick reflexes and the ability to squeeze your car as close to the edge of the road without causing damage. In some cases it may require you to actually back up to a wider part of the road so the oncoming traffic can pass.

Of course Ireland is not all scenic roads dotted with sheep farms and stone fences. You can quickly get from one end of Ireland to the other using very modern highways. For the Irish romantic (like me) it is a shame to see the modernization but for the Irish it is most welcome.

For the most part we stayed on the by-ways as discovering Ireland's uniqueness is often the best part of our trip. We saw many signs like this:

And let me just tell you that the road was just that sharply angled. Those signs don't lie.

My favorite road sign, by far, was this one just past the Cliffs of Moher on our way in to Doolin:

What you don't see is the sign just before it raising the speed limit to 100kph. It was quite funny.

Driving along the more scenic -and smaller- roads will definately take you longer in terms of time but it will also provide you many more memories than the fast paced highways.

More from me about driving in Ireland:
Getting Around Ireland
A Bit About Car Rentals in Europe

Since I had been to Killarney and County Kerry previously I had things in mind that I wanted to share with my family. And, of course, there were many things we didn't do. These are just a few other activities close to Killarney.

Ring of Kerry

The Iveraugh peninsula is probably the most traveled area in Ireland. And it is beautiful. But take my advice and avoid it. Yes, a bus tour is nice but your kids will get very bored very quickly. I did as a adult. If you choose to drive the Ring of Kerry you are suggested to travel anti-clockwise (the same way as the tour buses). Skip it. The "ring" is very commercialized.

Try either the Dingle Peninsula, which has stone age forts, oratories and bee hive monk's homes (and a resident dolphin), or the Beara Peninsula with it's walking paths and ancient archaeological sites. Both have the rugged beauty people surge to the Ring of Kerry for but neither has the crazy amount of tour buses.

The Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is about 5 miles out of Killarney. It is, as it's name suggests, a "gap" between two mountain ranges and was, for centuries, the main trade route into Killarney. Motorized traffic is forbidden (unless you actually live in the gap, so jaunting carts are available for hire. There is also a 40 or 60 mile bike loop from Killarney if cycling is more your thing.

Sculpture Road

Heading out of Killarney on the Cork Road (N22) you can't help but notice the carved rocks along the road way. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the rearing unicorn on a cliff edge near Clonkeen. It's magnificnet.

Kerry Glass Studio & Visitor Center

If you love Kerry glass be sure to visit this studio. To see glass being blown is incredible. There is also a shop because you're gonna want a souvenier.

Crag Cave

If you are an family of adventurers this underground wonderland may be for you. This is a great stop if you have older an younger children because they have an indoor play area to keep the little ones entertained while the older children explore.

I was contacted not long ago by Family Travel Gear, a company that specializes in products for people traveling with kids, and asked to review their products and services. Of course I was quite flattered- who doesn't like to try stuff?

I spent quite a lot of time perusing their website, which is very user friendly. You can easily find just what you are searching for with their categories by person, trip or item. As I looked through their travel items I was impressed by not only the large selection but also the fact that they have everything from games and books to GPS systems.

I chose to try their Snack & Play Travel Tray as we were preparing for a rather long car trip. I was immediately attracted to this tray over similar items because it has a foam base which is sturdy enough for drawing or eating but will not injure the child in case of an accident.

The tray itself can attach around a car seat, stroller or the child so it does not have to be steadied on the lap (therefore avoiding being dropped numerous times which may be a fun game for your little ones but not so much for you). There are big mesh pockets on both sides to hold crayons and small coloring books, toys or drinks. It also has foam sides to keep everything on the tray, which is great for on-the-go snacking. And since the tray is nylon it is easy to clean.

Here is the overview (from the Family Travel Gear website):

Strap buckles around car seat, stroller, or child

Foam insert collapses on impact

Padded rim keeps toys and snack on the travel tray

Two mesh side pockets

Sturdy nylon fabric

Dimensions: Tray area 10" x 15"; Side walls 2" deep.

Brenna, age 3 1/2 really enjoyed the tray for drawing and other activities.

Caelan, our 1 1/2 year old, liked it best to keep her snacks from escaping.

Although they don't mention using this tray for air travel I am going to. If you use a car seat on an airplane (which I recommend if your child is under 2 and you are taking a long flight) this will come in very handy as the seat back trays will not fold flat over your child's lap if they are in a carseat. This makes it very difficult when it is time to eat. I really wish we had this product when we flew to Ireland. (It would have also been really handy during all the driving we did over there.)

Family Travel Gear gets great marks from me for customer service. Every bit of my transaction with them was verified via email (you can also track your order via "My Account" on their website) and shipping was super fast. They have a 30 day 100% satisfaction guarantee policy and a member discount (for customers who create an account) of 5%.

I highly recommend them for your family's travel supplies.

We spent 4 days and 3 nights around Killarney. There is a reason this is one of Ireland's tourist hot-spots - there is so much to do! We didn't even scratch the surface. Kid friendly doesn't even begin to describe all you can do in and around Killarney.

Killarney is the major tourist town of south west Ireland; you can get practically anything here. One of our first stops was Christy's Irish Stores. Yes, Christy's is quite touristy. But if you are traveling with little ones there is no better place to let them pick out their own trinkets and souvenirs. Enter through the front door and head straight up the steps. Here you will find a very large, very open area of tourist gifts. Stuffed lambs, firey headed leprechauns, stuffed soccer balls... All emblazoned with "Ireland". My girls had a great time picking out their own souvenirs. And don't despair- there are treasures here for adults, too. And on your way back down the stairs take a quick turn to the left. There's a tiny nook right before the crystal room (don't leave the kids unattended in the crystal room!) with Bunratty Mead, whiskey candies and other flavorful goodies.

If you're after a true Aran sweater leave Christy's through the crystal room and turn left after your exit. Walk a couple of blocks and at the corner of College Street you will find the Aran Sweater Market. If you have any Irish in your background this is where you will come to get your hand knit clan sweater. And be sure to grab sweaters for the kids. The jumpers here are lovely- and warm!

Just a bit of history for you, in case you're wondering about Aran sweaters and clan knits: The Irish have always been people of the sea, as you would expect of an island nation. An Aran sweater can absorb 30% of its weight in water before feeling wet. This made it ideal for fishermen. Each clan has it's own design so when a body would wash ashore it could be identified by the weave of the sweater and the lost man could be returned to his clan for proper burial. For more thorough information click here.

A bit farther down College Street is a little shop called Serendipity. They have a beautiful selection of Kerry Glass.

And Country Crafts on Kenmare Place (just down from the International Hotel) had a great puzzle of Ireland and all its counties. The ladies who work there are absolute gems. They were so kind to the girls- and even shared their crisps.

Shopping is big business around the center of Killareny so I just want to leave you with this note: the shops close at 6pm. Do your shopping early.
